Chinese community celebrates 70th anniversary

Chinese culture including dragon and lion dancing, martial arts and traditional songs were showcased in Cape Town on Saturday at the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China./IAN LANDSBERG

 THE Chinese community in Cape Town at the weekend held a gala evening in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

At the Western Province Chinese Association in Observatory, Consul General Lin Jing, Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato, Chinese community leaders and representatives were among about 500 guests.

Traditional songs, dragon and lion dance, and martial arts were showcased.

Photographs, Chinese calligraphy and paintings by local members of the Chinese community were on exhibition as well.

Lin said the People's Republic of China has made tremendous achievements in the past 70 years.

He encouraged the local community to continue to make their special contribution in promoting the friendship between China and South Africa, supporting the development of their home towns and home countries, and realising the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as well.

Plato expressed his appreciation for the achievements made by the People's Republic of China and contributions to local social and economic development made by the local Chinese Community.

Photographs, Chinese calligraphy and paintings by local members of the Chinese community were on exhibition.
